Secondary school students across the East of England region will be learning first aid skills that could save a life as part of World Restart a Heart day later this month.

More than 40 schools in the region have signed up for this year’s event on October 16, where students learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

In the UK, around 30,000 people a year suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital. The chances of surviving drop 10pc a minute if CPR is not started – with survival rates in this country currently less than one in 10. Learning how to perform CPR for those minutes until an ambulance crew arrives could make the difference between life and death.

Andrew Barlow, community collaboration manager for the East of England Ambulance Trust said: “More than 195,000 children and young people across the country learnt CPR during last year’s Restart a Heart Day and this year we look forward to helping train the next generation of lifesavers with vital CPR skills.”
