A drunk teenager injured three officers as he laid into riot police who were trying to shut down an illegal rave in Norfolk woodland, a court has heard.

More than 50 people and a number of vehicles were discovered by police at the woodland site off the A47 in the Beachamwell area near Swaffham.

A Police Support Unit (PSU) of riot control officers, a dog unit and a drone unit had been called to shut the rave down.

Norwich Magistrates Court heard Jake Douglas, 18, had drunk a large amount of alcohol before going to the unlicensed music event earlier this year.

Police found Douglas “shouting and swearing and puffing out his chest in an aggressive manner”, the court was told. One of the officers suffered an injured wrist after Douglas kicked him.

Another officer was cut when he was his hit on the side of his helmet while another policeman got a cut hand after his shield was struck a number of times during the incident.

Douglas, of Bungay, Suffolk, previously admitted one count of using threatening behaviour and three of assaulting police officers at the illegal rave on May 19 this year.

He was sentenced to eight weeks custody, suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to pay each officer £75 in compensation, £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Howard Gill, chairman of the bench of magistrates, said the defendant had “taken on a number of police officers who were doing their duty”.

Natasha Baker, mitigating, said Douglas has pleaded guilty to the offences at the first time of asking and made full and frank admissions in interview.

She said he had been out of control due to the amount of alcohol he had drunk.

She said he felt ashamed and wanted to apologise for his behaviour and to those officers affected by it.

A video later emerged of police trying to break up the rave, which followed another illegal event at Bawsey Pits, near King’s Lynn, a few days earlier.

Speaking at the time Vicky Hebborn, community safety and citizens in policing inspector, said: “These types of unlicensed events are not uncommon at this time of year, but can be seriously distressing to local residents and landowners. They are very unsafe due to the remote location, closeness to fast roads and intoxication of people attending.”
