Pedlars' joy at Diss draw

27 January 2010

Diss Town 0, Swaffham Town 0

Swaffham were relieved to return to action after the long break - and were delighted to take a point from the game against high-placed Diss.

The Tangerines are fourth whereas the Pedlars are in the bottom half of the Ridgeons Division One table.

This Saturday, Swaffham entertain third-from-bottom Stowmarket, 3pm.

At Diss, Swaffham started strongly, winning a free-kick 30 yards out, Tom Rainford narrowly heading over from the Andrew Hunter delivery. Tight play between Matthew Parkinson and Kyle Plumb saw Plumb shooting wide.

Diss had several corners but the Swaffham defence was strong and clearances from Stephen Thompson and Tom Rainford left keeper Lee Brooks with little to do until the 30th minute, when he made a fine save to his right.

Swaffham finished the half strong with Parkinson and Hunter combining well, the resulting volley by Hunter being blocked and Hunter's free-kick on the stroke of half-time met by Danny Paynter, shooting narrowly wide.

Brooks had to be alert when Diss took a quick free-kick to save at his far post. Strong attacking by Kyle Plumb saw his cross narrowly missed by Matthew Parkinson. Diss were awarded a free kick close to time, 25 yards out, centre of goal. Brooks pushed the ball over.

The Pedlars' display was encouraging to see, the back four supported by Brooks, probably their best display of the season.

Swaffham Reserves beat their Watton counterparts 7-2 midweek and Long Stratton Reserves 3-2 Saturday. They now top Anglian Combination Division Four. The A-team beat hosts Cranworth 2-0.

This weekend the reserves visit Sheringham Reserves (2) and the A-team host Shipdham.
