Good win for Watton on court
27 January 2010
Following their 20-4 defeat at Branham Broom II, Watton Squash Club resumed after the Christmas break hoping that home advantage would make a difference - and got a creditable 16-6 win.
Dev Mahatme took a close first 9-7 and went 8-0 up in the next. His opponent fought back to go 9-8 up but Dev nicked it 10-9. He also took the third 9-5 to come through 3-0.
Bobby Hunt won the first 9-5 and edged a competitive second 10-9. He kept up the pressure taking the next 9-7 also winning in straight games.
Chris Haythorpe cruised the first 9-2. His opponent made a fight of it in the second but Chris took it 9-6. Then it was one- way traffic with Chris taking the third 9-0 to win 3-0.
Kevin Blake started strongly in the tie of the night. He edged a close first 10-8 and the second 9-3. At 3-3 in the third his young opponent seemed beaten but clawed it back taking it 9-3. Kev took a breather in the fourth losing it 9-1. His opponent kept up the momentum in the decider, going to 8-1 match ball and despite a gutsy rearguard action by Kev, eventually took it 9-4 to win 3-2.
First-string Paul Goodchild had a few good moments despite losing the first 9-3. The second went 9-0 with Paul getting a few points in the third, losing it 9-4 and going down in straight games.
